Chairman’s report - John

John thanked Gill and Harry for their very kind invitation to have our AGM in their home which is very much appreciated and thanked everybody for their attendance.
John presented Gill with lovely flowers as a token of our appreciation for hosting the event.
John thanked committee members for their support and hard work, very often behind the scenes. Congratulations to all the teams on another very successful season. The first team did particularly well in the much higher standards of the 2nd Division and were really well lead by George. The second team captained by Sarah not only won the St Simon and St Jude Cup but were promoted to the 4th Division. The third team under James had a good season and maintained their status in the 6th Division. Many thanks also to Janet and Les for all their hard work during the year and particularly in providing the history of the club.
Our junior section is going from strength to strength and it is good to see them developing so well and some of them now good enough to support the third team. Thank you to Pauline and George for all the Thursday nights help and support.
At this point John said he had been looking at the possibility of starting a fourth team which would involve many of our juniors. John had some concerns regarding the structure as to who would run it? The potential cost implications and hall availability, notwithstanding current junior skill level and transport for away fixtures. After much open debate the meeting welcomed the opportunity and agreed in principle to develop a fourth team and offered John all help and support to ensure this additional team to be established.  On this basis Les would inform the league of our intent to register a team in the 7th Division. (To be confirmed) At this stage Tuesday evening would appear to be best for junior match days.

Treasurer - Sarah

John thanked Sarah for looking after the finances and presented the Income and Expenditure for 2018/2019. The Statement of Accounts continues to reflect a healthy balance despite hall and shuttle costs. To further analyse income, Sarah has asked for clarity when monies are submitted to the bank to help identify source i.e. match fees, subscriptions etc. It was agreed a method of coding be introduced when submitting monies to assist Sarah more accurately present income streams.
It was agreed to increase the subscriptions for 2019/2020 to £35.00 and retain match fees of £5.00 and visitor fees of £3.00

General Secretary - Les

Les echoed John’s comments regarding the excellent club performance last season and congratulated all the teams, including the juniors, on a tremendous and outstanding year.
The Southport League AGM was attended by Janet and Les on 24th April 2019 so Les gave a brief overview of items raised and discussed by attending clubs:

Malcolm Banham thanked everyone who attended his Scorers seminar
Is there an interest for taking part in a Singles league?
Do clubs still require a hard copy of the Handbook or would prefer to use on-line format. (Cost to produce Handbooks is £1350 pa?)
Anyone interested in playing for the Town Team – advise Les
Cups and Shields - winning score sheets must be presented immediately following the match. Failure to do so could result in elimination from the competition or a heavy fine.    Should the League consider merging 7th and 6th Division?
Scorers – the League preferred option was to have scorers but recognised that clubs in the higher Divisions often did not.
All clubs to ensure Lancashire County fees are paid when submitting Badminton England fees – failure to comply could, delay League player registration approval.
Nb. HBBC AGM agreed the need to retain hardcopy of the Handbook but would reduce the numbers received to 10 if it helped with the cost.

In a well-supported Christmas competition The Jean Edwards Memorial Trophy was this year won by Janet Pope and Alex Grieves.

Match Secretary - Janet

Well we hit the ground running as we had all three teams playing on the same night in league week one!  Match Secretary’s job starts off easier as we only play on the one night BUT we don’t have any flexibility to move matches.  Postponements by away teams are a frustration. Timescale for rearranging as per rules but with only one match night it can be a real problem especially when trying to fit in cup matches and not move the scheduled league games.
We had about 5 occasions when all three teams played on the same night and managed to field full teams.
Many thanks to George for keeping the club website updated with the fixtures and for weekly updates on the Facebook page.

First Team report - George

A highly commendable year, finishing seventh in our debut season in 2nd Division, and competing against some very strong opposition. Congratulations to everybody involved in achieving a terrific performance. Special thanks to Shona for all the traveling from Liverpool.
A huge thanks to Janet Pope, Sarah and Maria for their understanding of my difficulties with selection, it was much appreciated.   Unfortunately next year Maria has decided to retire from competitive badminton, we will all miss her. Many thanks also to all the second teamers who floated up during the season and also to Tom Sherliker who made his ‘debut’ for the first team. Well done everyone. George awarded his player of the year to Chris Cottam – Chris has embodied the collective team performances of not being intimidated by the step up in division and playing in all 18 league matches against top pairs. Thank you Chris.

Second team report - Sarah

In Sarah’s absence Janet presented the captains report starting with – Well. What a fantastic season! Finishing as runners up in Division 5 and securing promotion to Division 4 for the first time – the highest recorded position in the clubs history. In addition to league success the second team won the St Simon and St Jude’s cup – Hesketh Bank name appearing on the trophy for the very first time.
Well played team and a massive thank you to HB3 for providing so many players having to cover for our unfortunate absentees – thank you all very much.
Star supporter award to Lisa – a well -trained money collector and score sheet recorder! The best of three champion Andy – (always wanted to get value for money) and finally brew champion Karen. A cuppa made all the difference.

Third team report - James

Apologies from James – traveling to London and probably ‘parked’ on the M6 at the time of our AGM.
“It has been a good year and we have done really well. There have been some excellent matches and good wins. Although we finished 3rd from bottom we were 10 points above the team below us and only events difference separating us from the team above. A huge thank you to juniors Tom, Olivia and Abbi who played really well when supporting the team.”
Player of the year award initially went to Tracy for control of third team monies - Tracy thanked James but declined the award and thought Kathleen, who had had an outstanding year, should be the recipient. Am sure James would acquiesce.
James went on to congratulate the second team on their promotion to Division 4 and appreciated having the opportunity to support them when necessary.

Subscriptions for 2019/2020 agreed in Treasurers report
